Historical Context
The New York and New Jersey Ferry Company was incorporated in New Jersey in 1895 to operate ferry service on the Hudson River between 23rd Street in Manhattan and the Jersey suburbs via the 14th Street dock in Hoboken.
In 1898, the company merged with the Hoboken Ferry Company to form the New York and Hoboken Ferry Company.
Ferry service on the Hudson was marginalized with the completion of the Hudson Tunnel which allowed train traffic to cross under the river at a much faster speed.
