Nicely engraved antique stock certificate from the Safety Dry Cleaning System Company dating back to the 1920's. This document, which is signed by the company President and Treasurer, was printed by the Security Bank Note Company and measures approximately 11 1/2" (w) by 7 3/4" (h).

Historical Context

The Safety Dry Cleaning Company was incorporated in New Jersey in 1924, but had operations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The company applied for a patent in 1930 for a dry cleaning apparatus which removed moisture from clothes or other articles when they were placed in the washer, then cooled the washer, then thoroughly washed the clothes with a fluid, then after the fluid was removed from the washer, heated the washer; then removed from the clothes and the washer all vapors; then condensed the vapors to recover the fluid and thoroughly dry the clothes; and then cooled the clothes by cooling the washer, and then aerated the clothes in the washer to remove odors, so that the clothes when removed were completely cleaned, dried, cooled and aerated, and were ready for pressing.

The apparatus also included means for cleaning the fluid after it is recovered from the washer, and this cleaning included the provision of a still, a condenser, a filter, and also a mixer, which latter insured the proper commingling of the ingredients of the fluid which could have become separated by the washing operation.
