The P. Lorillard Company was one of the country’s largest cigarette producers manufacturing such brands as Muriel Cigars, Murad, Mogul and Newport. The company also introduced Spring, which featured a Lorillard first - a Lorillard developed cigarette paper - "electronically treated to create uniform ventilation over the surface of the cigarette via hundreds of microscopic openings which take in fresh air and allow heat (but not smoke or flavor) to escape."
The company was actually formed as the result of a government suit against the American Tobacco Company. On July 19, 1907, when the U.S. Government brought suit against the American Tobacco Company, charging violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The case ultimately reached the Supreme Court, and in 1911, that Court issued a ruling that broke up the old American Tobacco Company into several large competing companies:
- American Tobacco Company (a new corporation)
- Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company
- P. Lorillard Company
