Historical Context
The Utica Suburban Railway Company was organized in April. 1896, for the purpose of building an electric railroad from Watkins Street to the village of Whitesboro, New York, westerly to a point near the village of Oriskany, New York, then to Summit Park, located on the easterly bank of the Oriskany Creek, about 1 1/2 miles south of Oriskany village.
This company owned important terminal facilities at Summit Park, consisting of a loop, track, sidings, a park of about 40 acres having about 3/4 of a mile of water front and illuminated park buildings. Another portion of the track of this company intersected the Utica Belt Line Street Railroad Company tracks near the West Shore crossing on Genesee Street, in the town of New Hartford, running on to the Forest Hill Cemetery.
All of the track of this company was operated by the Utica Belt Line Street Railroad Company under a 99 year lease, dated January, 1897, at an annual rental of $2,500 and the payment of a dividend whenever there is a dividend paid on the preferred stock of the Utica Belt Line Street Railroad Company.
The Utica Suburban Railway Company was merged into the Utica and Mohawk Valley Railway Company on November 29, 1901.
