The United States Ship Corporation was incorporated on June 12, 1920 in Maine to acquire the United States Steamship Company and the United States Transport Company.
The United States Steamship Company was incorporated in Maine on December 27, 1915 to consolidate a number of companies, including:
- Virginia Shipbuilding Company
- Binghamton Steamship Company
- Huron Steamship Company
- Minneapolis Steamship Company
- Saint Paul Steamship Company
- Bedford Steamship Company
- Newport Steamship Company
- Hudson Navigation Company
The company also owned the Groton Iron Works.
After the acquisitions, the company owned 15 ocean-going ships and three shipyards.
The company went into receivership in 1922 after amassing heavy losses, leading to the eventual formation of the United States Lines Company.
