Historical Context

In 1968, the Atlantic Richfield Company and Humble Oil announce oil discovery at Prudhoe Bay. Subsidiaries of the two companies and British Petroleum Company agree to design and construct a trans-Alaska pipeline.
In 1969, Atlantic Pipe Line, Humble Pipe Line and BP Oil Corporation announce plans to build an 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline to move oil from the North Slope to Valdez. The project is named the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). The three original TAPS companies are joined by Amerada Hess Corporation, Home Pipe Line Company, Mobil Pipe Line Company, Phillips Petroleum Company and Union Oil Company of California in joint venture.
In 1970, the Atlantic Pipe Line becomes ARCO Pipe Line Company.
