Historical Context
The Jim Butler Mining Company bears the name of the prospector who with his wife, Belle, made history's largest silver strike in 1900 in Tonopah, Nevada.
Butler made his historic find when one of his burros wandered off one day and was discovered three miles away, near a dark rock that turned out to be filled with silver. For two decades, that area was one of the world's richest silver and gold mining fields. Mines there were all closed by the end of the 1930s.
The town of Tonopah still holds an annual three-day celebration of Butler's find every July.
