Historical Context
The Springfield Gas Light Company was founded in 1847 with a contract to light the streets of Springfield. In 1878, they began providing gas heat to buildings.
The company converted most of their customer base to natural gas in the 1950's and 60's, which continued until 1974 when they merged with the Brockton Taunton Gas Company, the Northampton Gas Light Company and the Lawrence Gas Company to form the Bay State Gas Company.
