Historical Context
The Rumford Falls and Rangeley Lakes was incorporated on August 20, 1894, under the general laws of the State of Maine. Its principal office was located in Portland. On April 4, 1907, the Rumford Falls and Rangeley Lakes leased its property to the Portland and Rumford Falls Railroad.
Shortly after its incorporation, the Rumford Falls and Rangeley Lakes began construction of a railroad between Rumford and Houghton, and at later dates extended its line from Houghton to Bemis, and then to a point north of Oquossoc, all the work being done by independent contractors. On January 4, 1912, it sold that part of its line north of Oquossoc to the Rangeley Lakes and Megantic Railroad Company, after which transaction it owned 36.32 miles of road as follows:
- Rumford Falls to Houghton, 18.00 miles
- Houghton to Bemis, 8.60 miles
- Bemis, 1.00 mile
- Bemis to North of Oquossoc, 10.59 miles
- Chapman's (Mill), 0.14 mile
- Roxbury (Mill), 0.10 mile
- Bemis (Mill), 0.11 mile
