Historical Context
The Lowell Horse Rail Road was incorporated 1863 and opened the following year. It was Lowell's first horse-powered streetcar line.
The company's line extended from Belvidere, Massachusetts on the east side of Lowell, into downtown, then west to Pawtucket Falls, Rhode Island. The line was very successful and was a big factor in the development of Lowell and surrounding areas.
In 1891, the line merged into Lowell & Suburban Street Railway.
