Historical Context
The Keystone Wagon Works was originally incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1890 and was based in Reading.
The company produced wagons, carriages, platform and dumping bodies for trucks and even a few ambulances.
In 1899, the company was sold from its original ownership group, which was headed by J. A. Klees to consortium led by Nathan Ferguson. The new ownership brought automobile body manufacturing into the fold, which commenced in 1907. The company mainly made bodies for regional car makers like Chadwick, Duryea, Matheson, and Palmer-Singer. However, in order to concentrate on automobile bodies, the company cut its lucrative coal wagon prodcution. The decision was a bad one. Demand for composite automobiles bodies was much lower than anticipated, and the additional loss of revenue caused by the cessation of coal wagon production sent the firm into a bankruptcy filing in November of that same year.
The company's assets were sold off and reorganized as the Keystone Vehicle Company.
