Historical Context
In 1903, Mr. John J. Boland, Sr. and Mr. Adam E. Cornelius, Sr. form the partnership of Boland and Cornelius (the ship John J. Boland is depicted on this certificate). The American Steamship Company is subsequently incorporated in 1907. The original fleet consisted of three bulk vessels.
In 1967, the Oswego Shipping Company purchased the company, then in 1973, the company was again purchased, this time by transportation giant GATX.
