Historical Context
The Hollywood Hospital Company was incorporated in California on July 12, 1920.
The company was formed to build a 150-bed, Class-A semi-charity, non-sectarian hospital on Vermont Avenue in what was a fast-growing Hollywood. Construction began on February 10, 1923 and the first patient was admited on May 15, 1924.
One of the hospital's founders was Edwin Obadiah Palmer - who has signed this piece as the company President. Palmer came to California from New York City in 1900, locating in Hollywood, where for a quarter of a century he has engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery, in later years limiting his practice to general medical and surgical diagnosis. His office is at 6422 Hollywood Boulevard, and his home at 1745 Camino Palmero in Hollywood. From 1900 to 1910, Dr. Palmer was assistant county health officer of Los Angeles County, and served as city health officer while Hollywood was an independent city.
He was president of the Hollywood Medical Group, a copartnership of ten specialists, covering all the usual branches of medicine and surgery. He is also was a member of the consulting staff of St. Vincent's Hospital, where he lectured on ethics and hygiene for many years in the Nurses Training School. He belonged to the Los Angeles County, California State and American Medical Associations, and during the World War period had charge of Division One of the Los Angeles County Selective Service, and lectured on hygiene to recruits in the Hollywood Division, throughout the war period.
Dr. Palmer from 1905 to 1918 was president of the Hollywood National Bank and the Citizen's Savings Bank, both of which were organized by him and associates. He also promoted and managed "The Hollywood Citizen," Hollywood's second newspaper, 1906-1915. He was an independent Republican, was a member of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Hollywood Business Men's Club, the Municipal League of Los Angeles, Hollywood Lodge No. 355, F. and A. M. the Hollywood Masonic Club, the University Club of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Athletic Club, the Wilshire Country Club, the Tuna Club, Santa Catalina Light Tackle Club, the Catalina Three Six Club and the Automobile Club of Southern California.
