Historical Context
The Baltimore & Cumberland Railway was incorporated in Maryland in 1892.
The line was formed to extend the West Virginia Central Railroad's Davis, West Virginia to Cumberland, Maryland route to Baltimore.
The line was to run through Allegheny, Washington, Frederick, Carroll and Baltimore counties. The incorporation of the road was the result of the failure of the promoters to get possession of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The route as laid down was the
same as that of the Western Maryland, and it was thought by many financial and railroad men that the control of the Western Maryland was one of the intentions of the promoters. If that road was not secured, the new line would parallel it between Hagerstown and Baltimore.
There is no evidence the line was completed.
