Historical Context
The Central Cross Town Railroad operated Manhattan’s famous 14th street crosstown line as well as a diagonal route running from the Christopher Street Ferry on the Hudson River to the 23rd Street Ferry on the East River. It ran along 18th Street from Broadway to Avenue A, returning along 19th Street.
In 1890, they leased the 2 ¼ mile Christopher and Tenth Street Railroad, a horse car line chartered in 1873.
