Historical Context
One of the pioneers of the marble industry in the vicinity of Knoxville was the firm of J. J. Craig & Company, which opened a quarry east of the city in 1878. The firm was organized by Col. J. J. Craig, W. B. McMullen, and J. M. Edington.
The company acquired a number of other firms and reorganized as the Great Southern Marble Company in 1884.
In 1889, the company was merged into the Tennessee Producers Marble Company.
