Historical Context
The Jefferson Rail Road Company was incorporated April 28, 1851, by special act of the Legislature of Pennsylvania to construct and operate a line of railroad from a point in Pike County to a point on the New York State line in Susquehanna County, and to construct branch lines. The date of its organization was March 4, 1864.
The line extended from Lanesboro to West Carbondale, with detached branch lines projecting from Mayfield to Edgerton Colliery and from West Hawley to East Honesdale, aggregating 45.015 miles of road, with 35.324 miles of second main track.
