Historical Context
The Southern California Water Company was originally founded by brothers John D. and Adolph Spreckels. The brothers were critical to the boom San Diego experienced in the early 1900s, owning many important enterprises, including the San Diego Electric Railway Company, San Diego and Southeastern Railway Company, Point Loma Railroad, San Diego Union and San Diego Tribune newspapers, Spreckels Theater Building, First National Bank of San Diego, Mission Beach Company, Savage Tire Company, San Diego & Coronado Ferry Company, Bank of Coronado, Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Country Club, Coronado Tent City, and Coronado Water Company. The company was officially incorporated under California state law on December 31, 1929.
Today, the company is a subsidiary of the American States Water Company, along with the American States Utility Services, Inc. and Chaparral City Water Company. Through its subsidiaries, AWR provides water service to 1 out of 30 Californians located within 75 communities throughout 10 counties in Northern, Coastal and Southern California (approximately 252,300 customers) and to approximately 12,800 customers in the city of Fountain Hills, Arizona, and portions of Scottsdale, Arizona. The Company also distributes electricity to approximately 22,800 customers in the Big Bear recreational area of California.
