Historical Context
The Mount Beacon-on-Hudson Association was incorporated in New York in 1901 and operated the Mount Beacon Incline Railway and the mountaintop resort (Beaconcrest Hotel and Casino) it served.
The Mount Beacon Incline Railway climbed the west spur of Mount Beacon, giving access to the mountain top resort of the Mount Beacon-on-Hudson Association.
The cable railway was powered by electricity, and was reputed to be the steepest of its kind in the world, operating at an average incline of 64 degrees. It was 2,200 feet long, with a vertical rise of 1,200 feet.
The two observation cars were built on a tilt to correspond with the slope of the hill. A single cable, attached to each end of a car, passed over a rotating drum in the power house at the summit. While one car went up, the other descended - passing on a midway switch
The road was opened on Memorial Day in 1902, carrying more than 60,000 people the first season.
The railway operated into the 1970's when service was finally discontinued.
