Historical Context
The National Conduit and Cable Company began operations in 1891 in Hastings, New York along the Hudson River. They produced conduits consisting of cement-lined steel tubes, and later, cable wrapped in pregnanted paper for the transmission of electrical power for early electric utility companies.
Labor strife between striking workers of the National Cable and Conduit Company in 1912 left two strikers and two bystanders dead. Similar labor unrest occurred in 1916, whereby the village was put under house arrest.
During World War I, the company was given a U.S. Navy contract for four million rounds of Cal. .30 Model 12906 ball cartridges. Headstamp was NC and date of manufacture. Later this facility, under the name of National Brass and Copper Tube Company, was given a U.S. Army Ordnance contract to manufacture Cal. .30 Model 1906 ball cartridges.
In 1929, the Anaconda Cable and Wire Company took over the business and operated it until 1975 when the plant closed down. The Atlantic Richfield Oil Company of Los Angeles eventually took over the Anaconda Wire Company.
