Historical Context
The Hudson River Slate Company was incorporated in 1865 in New York and operated a quarry on the upper end of Schulz Mountain in Clinton, just outside of Rhinebeck. The slate was hauled to the Hudson River at Rhinebeck for transport by boat to New York City - where the company had a showroomon Park Row. The company was marginally successful, but in 1910, Dutchess County purchased the property for a whopping total of $14.95. The site eventually became the site of the Casperkill Gun Club. Records show that the quarry itself dated back to at least 1798. |
