Historical Context
The East Highlands Orange Company was incorporated in California on March 29, 1893. The company was founded by James S. Edwards on a property now known as the East Highlands Ranch.
Edwards built a ranch headquarters or Camp, for housing single men who worked for the company. This area was also where the barns and work areas were centralized. The first Camp was north of Greenspot Road, but it was soon moved to the Elder Gulch area - the present site of the recreation area of East Highlands Ranch north of Base Line.
Many firsts were tried on the company's ranch with one of the most successful being "sluicing" the land. By this hydraulic water action, low places and gulches were filled with dirt and made usable for planting.
By 1901, the orchards began to produce; $5,350 was an early amount found in one of the first records for the packing house.
