Historical Context
The Stony Brook Association was incorporated in New York in 1910.
The company was formed for the purpose of establishing at Stony Brook, Long Island, a summer colony and assembly. Conferences for the consideration of civic, educational and religious problems were held each summer from July 1 to August 31 - during the Chautauqua season.
Early on, the development of the Stony Brook enterprise saw 187 lots and building sites sold. Cottages were soon erected, as well as a 1,200 auditorium. Later, two hotels and fourteen bungalows owned by the Association were built, as well as a water plant. Overall, the company owned over 260 acres of land, 23 of which fronted the Long Island sound.
- The directors of the Stony Brook movement stood loyally on six positions:
- The essential and unique deity of Jesus Christ.
- The essential and absolute integrity of the Word of God.
- The need and efficacy of the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of the world.
- The presence and potency of the Holy Spirit in the discipleship.
- The divine institution and agency of the Church of Jesus Christ.
- The broad and binding obligation of the Church to evangelize the world.
Company offices were located in Brooklyn.
