Historical Context
Broadway Joe's, Inc was incorporated in Florida in 1968, and went public in March of the following year - fresh off Joe Namath and the New York Jets' stunning Super Bowl III upset of the Baltimore Colts. Investors gobbled up the initial offering at $10 per share, and it appeared that Namath would find the same sort of success other famous people (Arthur Treacher, Mickey Mantle, Johnny Carson, Minnie Pearl and Sammy Davis, Jr. to name a few) had reaped when lending their name to restaurant franchises.
But, from the beginning, the chain had problems. The food was blitzed by critics, that called it fair (that was a good review) to abominable. The restaurant's signature dish - the Quarterback Burger - was called a "dry, bland outrage" by food critic Gael Greene.
In New York, the company's Manhattan location (at Broadway and 56th Street) couldn't even be called Broadway Joe's. It was called Joe Namath's because a long standing restaurant already had the name - Broadway Joe's Steak House.
Within 18 months, Namath had ended his association with the 11-location chain (the original location was on Miami's 79th Street Causeway), and the stock plummeted to below a dollar. The chain vanished a short time later, a victim of mismanagement.
