Historical Context
The Dubuque and Pacific Rail Road was founded by Edward Slossan and Judge John T. Dyer. It was chartered on April 28, 1853 at Dubuque, Iowa. On October 1, 1855, George Wallace Jones dug first shovel-full of dirt for the line. On April 11, 1861, the first Dubuque and Pacific train arrived in Cedar Falls – setting off a huge celebration.
The line went through a series of fits and starts, only extending by a few short miles before falling into bankruptcy. After re-organizing on more than one occasion, including once as the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad, the line became part of the Illinois Central.
