Historical Context
The Canon City and Cripple Creek Railway was organized in Colorado in 1897 to build a line from Canon City to Cripple Creek via Victor.
The standard gauge line - which was to cover about 27 miles - was to be built for the purpose of furnishing cheap transportation, so that low grade ores could be carried to the mills and worked with profit. The Florence & Cripple Creek Railway, a narrow gage steam road, had a monopoly of this traffic, and its rates were so excessive it invited competition.
There are records that nine miles of track were graded by Orman & Crook of Pueblo, but there is no evidence the line was completed.
