Historical Context
The Automatic Flagman Company was incorporated in California on March 16, 1912 and was based on San Pedro Street in Los Angeles.
The company manufactured a railway crossing safety device, operated by electricity, which was made up of a circular metal danger signal which swayed to and fro like a pendulum on the approach of a train. A bell rang simultaneously, thus giving a double warning to vehicles and pedestrians nearing railway crossings. At night another safeguard was added, a red light flashing in the center of the signal. The device was used by a number of western railroads.
