Historical Context
| The Clarksburg-Columbus Short Route Bridge Company owned a bridge, erected in 1926, that spanned the Ohio river between the town of St. Mary's, West Virginia, and the town of Newport, Ohio. The bridge was acquired by the state of West Virginia in 1936 and renamed the "Hi Carpenter Bridge" on September 16, 1967. On December 15, 1967 the bridge's sister bridge - the Silver Bridge - collapsed with a loss of 46 lives. Cause of the failure was said to be one of the link pins gradually working out of the eye hence causing a parting of the suspension support and the entire superstructure fell. Because of its similiarity to the Silver Bridge the "Hi Carpenter" bridge was closed on December 18, 1967 by the West Virginia Department of Highways. It was opened to traffic on February 26, 1968 and closed again December 30, 1968 by National Transportation Safety Board thru Department of Highways of West Virginia. The West Virginia Highway Commissioner announced on June 18, 1969 that the "possibility of stress corrosion cracks prevented re-opening the bridge." The bridge was eventually rebuilt, opening in 1977. |
