Historical Context
The Cowley, Sumner & Fort Smith Railroad Company was incorporated in Kansas on October 28, 1878.
The company operated lines from Wichita to Arkansas City (68.61 miles) and from Mulvane to Caldwell (40.05 miles.)
In October of 1882, the company was folded into the Wichita and Southwestern Railroad along with the Harvey County Railroad.
The line eventually became a branch of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
