Historical Context
The Germantown Passenger Railway was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1858 and ran along Philadelphia’s Fourth and Eight Streets. It was later leased to the People’s Passenger Railway Company in 1881.
The People’s Passenger Railway was subsequently sold in 1893 to the People's Traction Company of Philadelphia, which in turn was leased in 1896 to the Union Traction Company, which was eventually leased in 1902 to the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company.
