Historical Context
The first man in America to build an efficient taxi, designed exclusively for taxi service, was John E. Murphy, President (who has signed this piece) and General Manager of the Yellow Taxi Company of Detroit. This was in 1909.
With his associates. Mr. Murphy took over the Taxicab Service Company that same year, and then united it with the Yellow Taxicab Company in 1922 to form the Yellow Taxi Company.
The Yellow Taxi Company of Detroit had no affiliation with the large concern of a similar name in Chicago. Different colored taxicabs were operated in different cities and states by individual companies, the color they choose being one of personal preference.
