Historical Context
Not to be confused with the famous gum company, this company made toothpaste and other related pharmaceutical products. W.W. Wrigley, who was a cousin of the gum giant, tried to capitalize on the Wrigley Chewing Gum name with his Spearmint toothpaste.
The company managed to stay in business for a couple of decades before operations were shuttered in 1941 due to the declining health of Wrigley.
W. W. Wrigley
W.W. Wrigley capitalized on the Wrigley Chewing Gum name with his Spearmint toothpaste and other pharmaceutical products. W.W. Wrigley was the cousin of William W. Wrigley (who made the chewing gum) and purposely promoted himself as W. W. Wrigley to provide just enough ambiguity when promoting his toothpaste company. The fraud was finally exposed in 1929, after the company had sold more than 300,000 bogus shares.
