Additional Details
Historic document dating back to the 1990's from this battery giant.
Exide's history began in 1888 when W.W. Gibbs founded the Electric Storage Battery Company to commercialize storage batteries, which he marketed to electric lighting companies. Over time, the company evolved with the automotive industry, supplying batteries for early electric taxicabs and later powering the first battery-started internal combustion cars in 1912. The company underwent various ownership changes, mergers, and name changes, becoming a major battery manufacturer that supplied the military, NASA, and the railroad industry. In 2020, Exide filed for bankruptcy protection, after which its North American assets were acquired and split into new companies, while the remaining international business continued separately.
