Additional Details
Fascinating piece of financial history from this historic retailer!
Hills Department Stores was a discount retail chain founded in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1957 by Herbert H. Goldberger. The company grew significantly, especially in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic, and was known for its toy and holiday displays, but it faced financial struggles and filed for bankruptcy in 1991. In 1998, the chain was acquired by Ames Department Stores, which itself went out of business in 2002, leading to the end of the Hills brand.
