Historical Context
The Universal Match Corporation was founded in 1925 by A.H. and S.M. Rosenberg. The Rosenberg family had already had a number of years worth of experience in match manufacturing and by 1925 had embarked on a venture of their own.
The ensuing history of the company is a tangled web of subsidiaries, mergers, takeovers, and other mysterious financial goings-on. In 1939, the Universal Match Corporation absorbed both the Union Match Company and the Federal Match Company, in the form of the Federal Match Corporation, to form the Pan American Match Corporation with the Virginia Match Corporation. Later, the whole thing went back to being the Universal Match Corporation.
In 1966, the company changed its name to UMC Industries, Inc.
Universal's production centers included locations in Hudson, New York; Los Angeles, California; St. Louis, Missouri and Kenner, Louisiana.
