Historical Context
The St. Joseph and Council Bluffs Railroad Company was formed when James F. Joy and his associates built a railroad from St. Joseph to Hamburg - a distance of just over 79 miles.
The line opened in 1868 and was quickly consolidated with the Council Bluffs and St. Joseph Railroad (which had been built a year earlier) under the St. Joseph and Council Bluffs Railroad name.
In 1870, the line was consolidated with the Missouri Valley Railroad to form the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs Railroad. The new line extended from Kansas City to Council Bluffs, a total of 197.30 miles.
