Historical Context
The South Bay Railroad and Land Co. was incorporated in California on April 22, 1875. Company offices were located in San Francisco.
The company built five miles of standard gauge track from Humboldt Bay to Salmon Creek. The line was constructed to serve the area's logging trade.
After the area was logged off, the railroad was transferred to the Freshwater Slough and renamed the Humboldt Logging Railway.
The line was eventually sold to the Excelsior Redwood Company.
