Reno Air had burst into the discount air business six years earlier and had constantly sought out routes where it thought it could make a splash and a buck. But it abandoned routes almost as fast as it created them. This regional airline was gobbled up by American Airlines in 1988.
At the time of the purchase by American, Reno spokeswoman Joanne Smith said, "We've been in and out of 39 city combinations in the last five years. We were an airline without much of a niche or a long-term strategy.''
Talk about flying from the seat of one’s pants!
