Historical Context
The Reading Base Ball and Athletic Association was incorporated on June 2, 1919 in Pennsylvania.
The company was formed to bring minor league baseball to the city's Lauer Park. The team, known as the Reading Coal Barons, played in the International League.
Before the inaugural season started, the team had to practice on the grounds of Circus Maximus - circus grounds built by William Abbot Witman - before Lauer Park's expansion and improvements were completed.
The Coal Barons joined the International League in 1919 and struggled all year, going 51-93 and finishing last in the IL. Red Dooin and Pop Kelchner both managed the team during the year. Myrl Brown (18-21, 2.93) and Dean Barnhardt (10-7, 3.60) helped sustain the team on the mound - the club went 23-65 when one of those two did not figure in the decision. 1B Mike Konnick (.335, .504 slugging) led the offense.
The club was renamed the Reading Marines in 1920.
