The Raritan River Railroad began operating in 1888 and by 1917 had a 12.6 mile mainline running from South Amboy to New Brunswick. The line had two interchanges - in Sayreville (with Camden and Amboy), and in South Amboy (with the New York and Long Branch).
Passenger service was discontinued in 1938, though freight service still continues today. In 1980, the line was absorbed by Conrail.
