Historical Context
The Pilsen Lumber Company was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1888 by John Miksak.
The company's original operations were located at West Cermak and Ashland, but by 1900, the company had moved to 22nd Street and Laflin, one block east of the end of the new streetcar line at Ashland Avenue.
The Pilsen neighborhood, located on Chicago's South Side, is a historically working class, residential neighborhood and gateway for immigrants coming to the City of Chicago. The area was initially settled by Czech immigrants to the United States who named the district after Plzeň, a city in what is now the Czech Republic. According to the results of a 1978 survey which asked residents the name of their neighborhood and its boundaries, the approximate borders for Pilsen neighborhood are West 16th Street to the north, the Dan Ryan Expressway to the east, Interstate 55 to the south, and South Ashland Avenue to the west. In 2006, Pilsen Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Pilsen Lumber Company supplied the materials for much of the neighborhood's construction effort.
The site of the company's latter location is now a Coca-Cola distribution center.
