Beautifully engraved antique bond certificate from the Philadelphia, Reading and New England Railroad Company dating back to the 1890's. This document, which is signed by the company Vice President and Secretary, was printed by the American Bank Note Company and measures approximately 10 1/2" (w) by 17" (h).
The certificate features two vignettes - the Reading Terminal at the top and the Poughkeepsie Bridge at the bottom.
A full page of coupons remains attached at the right side margin.

Historical Context
In January 1892, the Philadelphia & Reading Company purchased from the Delaware and New England Railroad Company the capital stock of the Poughkeepsie Bridge Company and a majority of the stock of the Central New England and Westeran Railroad, which then went into receivership.
In August 1892, Philadelphia businessmen incorporated the Philadelphia, Reading and New England Railroad Company as a consolidation of the Central New England & Western and the Poughkeepsie Bridge Railroad Company, acquiring also the lease of the Dutchess County Railroad.
In May 1893, when the PR&NE defaulted on its interest payments, and foreclosure followed. In 1899, the railroad became the Central New England Railway Company.
In 1907 the Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut, the Poughkeepsie and Eastern and the Poughkeepsie Bridge Railroad Company were also joined to the same Central New England Railway Company.
