Historical Context
The Offshore Company was at one time the largest offshore contract oil drilling company in the United States.
The company was formed in 1953 as a consolidation of the DeLong-McDermott and the Southern Natural Gas Company, and developed the first turret-moored "drill ship" for deepwater exploration - the Discoverer 1.
The company went through a series of ownership changes in the 1970's and 1980's before spinning off their fleet to Transocean in 1993.
