The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1892. in 1892.
The line, which was contained entirely within Pennsylvania, extended from Crawford Junction to Johnsonburg with a detached line extending from Brockwayville to Toby Mines together with several branches to coal mines, In total, the line operated 45.251 miles of road with 20.428 miles of second main track - forming part of the main line between Carrollton, New York, and Johnsonburg.
The company was incorporated originally incorporated as the Wilcox and Howard Hill Improvement Company, which was later changed to the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company.
The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was controlled indirectly by the Erie, by virtue of its control of the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company, the company that owned the majority of the outstanding capital stock of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad.
