    Historical Context

The Middlesex and Somerset Traction Company was incorporated on February 20, 1900 as a consolidation of the New York & Philadelphia Traction Company and the Brunswick Traction Company. The line was known as the "Interurban Line", or the "City-to-City" trolley line.

The company's lines connected New Brunswick, Piscataway, Middlesex, Bound Brook, Somerville, Bridgewater, Raritan, Highland Park, Metuchen, Dunellen, Plainfield, North Plainfield, Milltown, East Brunswick, South River, Sayreville and South Amboy.

In 1902, the company developed the Sea Breeze Amusement Park, on what was known as Ward's Park. Aside from trolley service, visitors rode steamboats from South Amboy and New Brunswick. An early map of the grounds showed a hotel, dancing pavilion, merry-go-round and bath houses.

In 1904, the company became part of the Public Service Corporation of New Jersey.
