Historical Context
The Matteawan Manufacturing Company was formed in Beacon, New York in 1864. At the time, the company’s plant, which produced fine woolen and felt hats and was located between Fishkill Creek and Main Street, was one of the largest manufacturing facilities in New York state.
In 1882, the company began producing straw hats as well.
By 1913, the company employed 332 men and 70 women.
The company’s goods were sold through Searle Dailey & Company, 600 Broadway, New York City.
The building would later become the first lawnmower manufacturing plant in the United States before being turned into a high end hotel, spa and restaurant in 2012.
