Intricately engraved antique stock certificate from Lynchburg & Durham Rail Road Company dating back to the 1890's. This document, which is signed by the company President and Treasurer, was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore and measures approximately 10" (w) by 7 3/4" (h).
This certificate's vignette features a train steaming down the tracks.

Historical Context
The Lynchburg & Durham Railroad Company was organized under the laws of the States of North Carolina and Virginia in February of 1887. The road succeeded the Lynchburg, Halifax & North Carolina, the Roxboro, and the Durham & Roxboro Railroad Companies.
The line was completed from Lynchburg to Rustburg in 1888; to South Boston, Virginia, in 1889, and to Durham, North Carolina on September 15th, 1890.
The line was leased in January, 1892, to the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company.
