Historical Context
The Luck Sure Mine was one of the many Tombstone, Arizona mining properties that sprung up in the 1880's. The Luck Sure was 1.2 miles south/southwest of Tombstone and was adjoined by the Lucky Cuss property on Lucky Cuss Hill, In August of 1882, after the original owners thought the land to be valueless, the mine passed into the hands of new owners, who began to work the property vigorously. They opened a strong vein, running diagonally through the entire length of the claim, showing itself at a depth of 120 feet to be fully 25 feet between walls. In addition to this, two chimneys or chutes of manganese ore were uncovered on the northwest corner of the claim; and still farther south, a third one, similar in character, but carrying more lead. On these different ore-bodies, some 300 feet of shafts were sunk, and about 400 feet of drifts run, with very satisfactory results.
But like most of the mines formed during the Tombstone boom, success was moderate and shortlived. Tombstone's population, generally estimated at more than 10,000 in 1882, fell to less than 650 by the end of the 1890s.
There were a couple of mining revivals in the early twentieth century - including this iteration - but mining in Tombstone never flourished again as it had in 1882.
