Historical Context
A. T. Kinney was born at Amherst, Ohio in 1854. He began his business career as a newsboy for the Cleveland Herald. His father was Henry R. Kinney, a cigar manufacturer on Cleveland's west side.
Kinney formed the A. T. Kinney Steamship Company in Cleveland in 1909 to haul iron ore, coal, and other bulk materials on the Great Lakes. Some of the company's ships were:
