Historical Context
The Indianapolis Southern Railway was formed by a group of local businessmen in 1899.
The line began service in 1906 between Indianapolis and Switz City, Greene County, Indiana. There it linked with the Indiana and Illinois Southern.
The Illinois Central Railroad assumed control in 1909, creating a single line from Indianapolis to Effingham, Illinois.
